Let me introduce you to a rap group of nine brothers based in Atlanta, GA with something different to add to the hip-hop scene. The Tribe Akashic takes the melodic sounds of reggae, soca, soul, electronic sounds, and of course hip-hop to create a musical vibe that captures the true essence of the group’s diverse background. Members of The Tribe include RBT JNS (Pronounced Robot Jones), Caine Flaco, shynova., Harú, San Juan, TAE, Ursa Major, EnKore, and Master Wendu. Although The Tribe is not signed to a label, the group is able to successfully produce, write, engineer their own music, and create their own visuals. How’s that for getting it on your own?
The group is still fresh on the block, but their lyrics and style already prove to be full of flavor with a hint of nostalgic synergy. I got the opportunity to learn a little bit more about The Tribe with a quick Q&A. Here’s what they had to say:
How did The Tribe form? What bought you all together?
We were all cool with each other in high school. Our commonalities, ranging from our perspectives [on] life to our appreciation of the arts, served as the gravitation which eventually formed a lifelong brotherhood–The Tribe Akashic. As we continued to grow together through the years, we realized how our individual aspirations can be achieved through similar means.
The name of the group, what does it mean?
The name “The Tribe Akashic” partially derives from The Akashic Records, which is a collection of thoughts & emotions that rest in a non-physical place. “The Tribe” simply means we are the storytellers & record keepers helping document this time in those libraries. Through our art we act as vessels for our ancestors, surroundings & ourselves.
Do you all have specific roles? Like who does what? Or do you all work simultaneously
Business wise, we all work together with each member taking the lead at some point. The benefit of us knowing each other for so long, is that we know each other’s strengths. This makes dividing the load easier and more effective. Creatively, it depends on the vision of the task. We let it flow naturally. As far as the technical side, San Juan handles most of the visuals, while Harú does most of the audio & mixing alongside Enkore.
Describe the type of music you make.
Because our individual backgrounds are so diverse, the genre of music we make can stretch from that good ol’ 90s feeling hip hop to disco to reggae and soca. The benefits of having 9 members with different personalities, is that the type of sound generated is directly related to the different mixtures of our members. For example a shynova. & Harú collaboration may generate a more electronic based sound, while Caine & TAE coming together can bring forward raw, lyric driven hip hop. The outcomes are really limitless
What makes your music special? What makes it different?
We don’t filter shit. We make the music we love to make while saying what we want to say. What makes it cool, is that we can make a track inspired by our intellectual sides one day, and the next, make a song about having fun. We don’t stick to one type of concept nor genre. What gets created is a direct extension of what we’re feeling in that exact moment. By creating a hub of all types of music, The Tribe Akashic provides our fans with a vast variety of sounds to listen to.
I know you all have been dropping a lot of singles and visuals lately, doing a few shows here and there….. So, what’s the next move?
This year we actually kicked off with a Tribe Cypher called “Tribe Cyph“. You guys should be seeing a lot more complex visuals and songs as the year continues, with glimpses of more Tribe Merch, the growth of our brand, & traveling. It’s going to be fun. We also will be pushing more of our own “Night At The Village” events, which consist of the gathering of genuine artists that we’ve met along the journey (whether it be painters, producers, singers etc.) and putting shows together that evenly display our talents.
Anything else you want the good folks to know?
We can’t stress enough that Tribe is more than just music. Not only is Tribe a brotherhood, we are a community. Expanding to “The Village”(which includes everyone we have unbreakable bonds with outside of Tribe). We have built a support system that is sure to continue past our generation. Art is just the venue we choose to express ourselves through.
