After much anticipation, the world was given Views by Toronto’s very own Drizzy Drake on April 29th 2016.
I think we’ve all marinated on it, talked about it, and came up with our own opinions on whether or not the album lived up to it’s hype. Whether you hated or loved it, Drake had and still has the media buzzing with his latest work.
While listening to Views, instead of thinking up what I wanted to say in a review, I jotted down 8 quotes from a few tracks that really resonated with me. I’m in a time of major transitions, and it has me feeling really out of whack. I don’t know about ya’ll but some of these quotes gave me some much needed positivity, and self-appreciation.
I’m probably taking some of these to heart, but I know somebody else is where I’m at and could use what I took from these quotes.
- Keep the Family Close:
“If I ever loved ya, I’ll always love ya. That’s how I was raised.”
Simple. No explanation really needed here. If you have real unconditional love for someone, anyone, that never really goes away. When things go sour you still find yourself willing to be there for them, even if it is from a distance. People who think like this are great to have in your circle. It seems like Drake comes from a solid home if that’s how he was raised.
2. Feel No Ways:
“I tried with you. There’s more to life than sleeping in and getting high with you. I had to let go of us to show myself what I could do, and that just didn’t sit right with you.”
Although this is definitely set in the context of a romantic relationship this can totally be applied to any relationship that is holding you back. Sometimes you have to let go of the baggage and toxicity to get yourself to where you need to be. It’s ok to be selfish every once in a while.
3. Weston Road Flows:
“The only thing I did to end up here was put the work in, and I did it with a purpose.”
I don’t know about you, but I’m trying to be where Drake is. Not a billionaire rapper with Rihanna right next to me, per se. I want to be where Drake is in the sense that he is doing something he loves, and reaping the benefits of that because he worked hard for it. The key word here for me is ‘purpose’. Working tirelessly and aimlessly will ultimately leave you unfulfilled. I’m so here for Drake’s secret to success.
“Working, working, working, working ain’t ya? You don’t have no time to lay up. You just trying to be somebody, ‘fore you say you need somebody. Get all your affairs in order.”
I saw a lot of ladies drop this verse on my Twitter timeline. Looks like we’re all working hard out here doing our thing trying to be somebody. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love an independent woman? Especially when she has all of her ducks in a row looking forward to meeting someone who compliments her, not needing someone to complete her. Big difference!
5. Child’s Play:
“Momma is a saint, yes she raised me real good. All because of her I don’t treat you like I should.”
Ok, Drake is totally a mama’s boy and he is proud of it. Shout out to his mama’s parenting skills! Out of context of the verse that I pulled this from, I can appreciate the level of maturity that it takes to say something like this. I’m thinking:
Although you screwed me over and treated me foul; I’m not going to treat you like the a-hole you truly are.
In context is an entirely different story for a whole ‘nother mood and conversation. If you’ve listened to this track you know exactly what I mean.
6. Pop Style:
“All this for my family, man, I try my hardest. It’s all I ever did and look where it got him.”
It’s safe to say family is the purpose that drives Drake to ” put the work in”. Whether it’s being able to take care of your family or make them proud; family is a an awesome motivator to keep you pushing towards success. Never forget where you came from!
“I got a pure soul, I don’t do the hate. You don’t worry ’bout fitting in when you’re custom made.”
I have four words. Stay. In. Your. Lane. Easier said than done sometimes when you see people reaching peaks in their life that you haven’t reached yet. I get it because I struggle with that too. However, it’s always important to remember that we are all in our own lanes driving to our own destinations, and there’s not one way to get there. Different speeds, different cars, and hell even different weather. Don’t hate or put yourself down looking over into someone else’s lane. We’re all traveling differently.
“Look, they’d rather run up on me than towards them goals.”
I think Drake was firing some shots here. Regardless, the stay-in-your lane agenda still applies. Except we see the actual disadvantage of what not doing that is; you won’t reach your goals. Worrying about what other people are doing and how they’re doing it takes a lot of time. That’s time you can spending accomplishing something for yourself instead watching someone else and trying to have what they have. You could have something greater, or better yet something that is greater for you specifically. But you wouldn’t know because you weren’t focused. Let’s not be that!
I hope this reached a Dreamr somewhere, leave us comments with your thoughts or favorite lyrics!
