We love it! We spend an unhealthy amount of time pouring thoughts, comments, and whatever else into it:
We really love it, and for some pretty darn good reasons too. Instant news, new music, interesting facts, instant connection to old friends, all that jazz; all thanks to our favorite social media platforms. What a time to be alive, for real. There’s some kinks to this obviously. Social media has the ability to make anything trendy. Seriously, anything.
There’s a few pop culture trends that are particularly interesting to me. Take a look.
If you didn’t have an epic prompsal, can you really even go to prom? The answer is yes, but hundreds of high-schoolers have been getting crazy with these outrageous prom presentations. We’ve all seen the videos of students lining the halls to watch as a seemingly lucky girl gets asked to prom. Balloon showers off of common area balconies, boyfriends getting down on one knee with no ring, and a team of basketball players bombarding the unsuspecting girl with roses as a favor to their bud are a few things I’ve seen. It’s romantic in a I-hope-this-isn’t-a-waste-of-time kind of way. The ones that aren’t completely outlandish are really adorable. Some of these could be more extravagant than a wedding proposal if there was a flash mob involved. Go figure.
2. The Running Man Challenge
Since about 2012 there have been several “challenges” to grace the inter-webs, but this one really doesn’t make any sense to me. The actual running man dance that I remember looks nothing like this, so I’m really interested to know how this even got started and why it’s being done to “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJs. That song is a true classic! Hands down one of the best songs to jam out to. So, maybe that’s why. *shrugs* The internet is a strange place, man.
3. Cute Couple Fandoms
America is really obsessed with the rich and/or famous. There are tons of studies and articles on the matter so don’t debate me. This is fact. It is the reason why gossip blogs, and reality television shows are so popular. It seems like now, you don’t even have to be a celebrity to earn a crowd of fans. If you’re talented in anything and know how to use a camera phone, you’re shot at fame can be so much closer than you think. You can even go viral by being a photogenic and like-able couple. A video of you kissing your boo, or pictures of extravagant gift exchanges can earn you a couple thousand retweets, and possibly a fan page if you keep it up. Some are super cute! Then there are others where it’s clear that the pair is forcing it to go viral. Now that’s more weird than interesting. Most people in relationships post all types of info about the great things happening between them. It’s cool if that’s your thing, but now it’s like if you don’t follow suit people assume your relationship is trash.
4. Twitter Timeline Stories
Thank you Zola for your elaborate and entertaining story that you shared a while back. Yea, I read it and ya’ll don’t flex like you didn’t either. Well, maybe you didn’t. The point is I’m placing the blame for this trend on Zola. I’ve seen stories about getting caught cheating, wild sex-escapades, women plotting on their frenemies fathers, and a plethora of other super juicy yet very dirty material. Timeline stories are like watching soaps, or like reading a chapter out of Zane. There’s really no limit to how far these stories go. Even if some of them are made up it’s a cool way to kill about 3 minutes. Some of ya’ll need to write a book honestly. Hell, I’d read it.
5. The Mr. Krabs Meme
Alright, so memes and GIFs are a given now on any social media platform. Memes have even made there way to our text inboxes. It gets real in these millennial streets so you gotta stay strapped with the memes and GIFs. The latest and greatest meme to hit has definitely gotta be this Mr. Krabs meme. You might have never even seen 1 episode of Spongebob Squarepants in your life, but you know good and well that there was something inexplicably funny about this picture of Mr. Krabs. Shout out to whoever brought this guy to the table because the tweets and posts that began to be paired with the picture have left me in tears from crying. Social media can make anything trendy, and anything super hilarious.
