Ever since the young Smith whipped her hair into our lives, Willow has been growing before our eyes. For some, her and her immediate older brother, Jaden, have been weird in their growth. They’ve been called “afro-futurists” and other classifications but what can’t be said is that they fit any mold or brand that they could be labeled to.
Over the last few years, Willow has released loose tracks and features that have been completely opposite of her adolescent debut. This morning, around 12am, she released her first official album. According to an interview with Fader, Willow noted, “Ardipithecus Ramidus is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth. I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state. Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs. Ardipithecus is my first album in my entire career and it makes me feel so blessed to be able to share my evolution with the LightEaters as I continue excavating my inner worlds.”
I’ll encourage you to listen with open ears, the project is quite different but has some cool vibes to it. Make your own decision with the stream below courtesy of Spotify.
Notes: Willow wrote 14 of the 15 tracks on her own and produced 10 of the 15. Trey Smith (AcE) and JABS are the other production contributors.
